Nazeh Exhibition
Project type
Exhibition Curation
Date
07-24 November
Location
Cairo - Egypt
This exhibition takes visitors on a profound and evocative journey through the linguistic landscape shaped by the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. It presents a collection of phrases, expressions, and colloquialisms that reveal glimpses of daily life in displacement and embody the collective culture they carry. Each term is rich with meaning, offering a unique narrative that finds its place in our shared memory. These expressions are not merely words; they are vessels of history, carriers of shared pain, resilience, and hope.
Through visual storytelling, the exhibition explores the stories behind these phrases, centring around the character of “Nazeh”, who engages in a set of visual expressions laden with meanings and popular culture moving across cityscapes and urban terrains, “Nazeh” relies on three things to navigate the uncertain path of displacement: a strong rope, an olive tree branch, and their hands.
At the heart of this exhibit lies an interactive map that revisits the concept of displacement, recalling vivid narratives etched on a wooden floor. The map traces paths of life and death, hope and sorrow. Each thread weaves a story, and each story stands as a testament to history.
The exhibition concludes in a corner dedicated to the idea of “return” and its complex hopes. It invites reflection on how time and political changes over more than 75 years have eroded and redefined this concept. In closing, the artist imagines a journey of return, where paths are folded, stitched, and pulled, bringing space and time back to the larger homeland... a homeland called Palestine.
