SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMPLEX-GAZA STRIP
Date
2011
Location
Gaza Strip
This project addresses the solid waste management problem in the Gaza Strip, marking the first initiative of its kind in Palestine. The complex is divided into three main phases:
Landfill Design
Market Zone Design (for recycled products)
Industrial Zone Design
Landfill Zone Design
The landfill zone, designed by me, is located in the southeast of Gaza City, approximately 6 kilometers from the city center. The site spans a total area of 660 acres and includes the following facilities:
Landfill for waste disposal
Administration building
Composting facility
Rotary station
Washing and cleaning center for lorries
Lorry station
Water leachate treatment center
Concept Design
The design concept is based on the principles of Folding Architecture, which translates the project's functional and aesthetic requirements into dynamic and coherent forms. This approach aligns closely with the project's core ideas, creating a strong synergy between concept and application.
Inspired by the process of handling waste materials—such as stretching, cutting, pressing, and wrinkling—Folding Architecture reflects these transformations in the architectural elements. Buildings are conceptualized as sheets of paper that undergo various processes to achieve their final forms, embodying the interplay of pressure, folding, and manipulation. This innovative approach not only reflects the essence of waste recycling but also integrates it seamlessly into the architectural narrative.
