Third Space Initiative - Co-founder
Project type
Artist-led collective initiative
Date
August 2025
Location
Cairo- Egypt
The Third Space Initiative is an emergent, artist-led collective framework founded in response to the urgent conditions of displacement experienced by Palestinian artists following October 2023. Conceived as a temporary yet structured formation, the initiative operates as a hybrid space for collective organization, cultural production, and self-representation among displaced artists, particularly in Egypt.
Positioned neither as an institution nor as a substitute for existing unions, Third Space functions as a critical “in-between” — a space that resists institutional absence while avoiding fixed bureaucratic forms. It enables artists to organize collectively, articulate their needs, and reclaim agency over their cultural and professional trajectories under conditions of precarity and exile.
The initiative focuses on advocacy, network-building, and the development of shared infrastructures, including collective assemblies, workshops, artistic programming, and a living archive of displaced practitioners. It also engages with cultural and international institutions to address legal, social, and economic challenges faced by artists in transit.
At its core, Third Space Initiative repositions art not as a secondary practice in times of crisis, but as a vital mode of survival, resistance, and collective continuity. It proposes a model of cultural organizing grounded in solidarity, self-governance, and the reconfiguration of belonging beyond territorial constraints.
